We first need to understand what V8 racing cars are. Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has been operating various categories and these are the touring racing cars categories operated under the regulation of FIA. These cars run as international Series and is based in Australia.Apart from Australia this has been enjoying its popularity in New Zealand and slowly around the world. The main focus is where television coverage is high. However, this year i.e in 2010, the main areas for this racing car category would be in all states of Australia, as well as rounds in Northern Territories, New Zealand and Bahrain and now Abu Dhabi has also joined the events.
The main aim of the regulations is to provide the balance between the racing car competitions and the fast vehicles as there were requirement for reasonable cost as well. In the beginning of year 2003, the racing between Holden and Ford took place and then the risk of one brand was reduced.
Let us now discuss about the look and feel of the car. V8 supercars are rather based on production road cars giving them a base car model look. The current specifications for this car are based on VE commodore or FG Falcon production body shell. However, in year 2007, there was the demand for cost reduction, so there was slight difference in the model and the look of the car. For this reason, both Commodore and Falcon adopted E-glass front mudguards and previously there used to production steel items.
They have their own stories to tell. Earlier, VE Commodore was rejected to take part in this series because the wheelbase was rather longer and wider than BF Falcon. For this reason, V8 supercar directed Commodore a custom fabricated body shell and there were limited number of production body shell panels. With this, the roofline became lower than the production and rear door got shorten. Similarly, For FG Falcon, the longer wheel base required a custom-fabricated shorter body and it was made shorter in the rear door and lowered in the roof line. There are weight measurements also, without the driver this category weighs 1355kg.
Almost every car falling into this category use identical spool differentials, gearboxes and brake packages. There is a 6- speed Hollinger gearbox made in Australia is used in all cars of this category. The theoretical maximum speed of the cars is 306 km/h at 7,500 rpm. The fuel tank is incorporated to the cars which has the capacity of 120 litres of fuels.
There are three separate V8 car series exist. The first one is “Level One” series or championship which is also known as “V8 Supercar Championship Series” After this, the second one is “Level Two” championship which is also called Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series. This series was initially introduced for privateers who had formerly raced in Level One Series. The third series of this category is for older V8 supercars and it is called “Shannons V8 Touring Car National Series” and it was first help in year 2008.
